Course Description:

Michigan implemented the 2015 Michigan Residential Code (MRC) on February 8th, 2016.  This is the first update to Michigan’s residential code in over 6-years.   Contractors, building officials, and suppliers are working hard to learn, understand, comply, enforce and profit from this new complex code.

Striving to support excellence and success of Michigan’s licensed mechanical contractors, the Michigan Air Conditioning Contractors Association (MIACCA) has designed and is offering a 2015 MRC Mechanical Code course to help position our current and future members to be successful in a new era of residential air conditioning in Michigan.

MIACCA is utilizing three of Michigan’s most respected licensed mechanical contractors to develop and offer a 3-hour 2015 MRC Mechanical Code course that will specifically cover provisions of the 2015 MRC that impact the HVAC mechanical trades.  This comprehensive course covers relevant provisions in including Chapters 3 and 11-24 of the 2015 MRC.

Course Goals:

MIACCA has assembled these experts in an attempt to provide the best information available for those seeking to understand three basic questions about the new code from a mechanical contractor’s perspective:

  1. What do I need to do differently from the 2009 MRC to the 2015 MRC?
  2. What do I have to do to pass inspection?
  3. How will this new code impact how I have to price projects?
  4. Course

Designers & Instructors:

  • Phil Forner, MIACCA Treasurer, President of Allendale Heating Company, Inc., Allendale, MI. Well established expert in Michigan mechanical rules, laws and regulations.  A State of Michigan approved instructor and State of Michigan registered mechanical inspector, plan reviewer and building inspector.

  • Brad Bartholomew, MIACCA Immediate Past-president, President Bartholomew Heating & Cooling, Inc. Kalamazoo, MI. Member of the Michigan Mechanical Code Review Committee.  A State of Michigan approved instructor and most certified BPI professional in Michigan.

  • Ed Bartram, MIACCA Board Member, President of Diversified Heating & Cooling, Inc., Farmington Hills, MI. Former member of the Michigan Mechanical Board and current member of the Michigan Commercial Energy Code Review Committee. A State of Michigan approved instructor.

  • Brindley Byrd, MIACCA Executive Director.  Extensive national speaking experience and has monitored and participated in the development of the 2015 MRC since the fall of 2013.

Course Outline:

After completing this course, attendees will be able to visually identify the changed mechanical provisions contained within the 2015 MRC; specifically Part I Administrative Chapter 1, Part II Definitions Chapter 2, Part III Building Planning and Construction Chapter 3, Part IV Energy Conservation Chapter 11, Part V Mechanical chapters 12 – 23, and Part VI Fuel Gas Chapter 24, including plan review and field verification of areas of specialty.

Specific Learning Outcomes (Tasks):

  • Identify compliant and non-compliant installations of mechanical equipment and materials
  • Identify and describe compliant mechanical ventilation systems
  • Understand building thermal envelope and building cavities
  • Calculate and verify air infiltration testing results
  • Explain basics in blower door testing and duct sealing testing
  • Explain the basic underlying building performance principles in order to verify unusual compliance options that meet the intent of the code
  • Review compliance documentation submitted for permit and plan review
  • Describe and verify code compliance criteria for final inspections prior to issuance of certificates of occupancy

Course Handouts:

Each attendee will receive a copy of the course PowerPoint handout along with a copy of MIACCA’s 2009 MRC to 2015 MRC Section by Section Crosswalk.  This section by section crosswalk identifies the changes between these two codes, indicate the type of change, if that change in significant and shows what that change is in a single-reference source for mechanical contractors.

Each attendee will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.

Code Books:

All attendees are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to have a copy of the 2015 MRC code book to refer to during the class.  Attendees can pre-order copies of the code book included in the course, or can purchase copies at the venue for $150.
